ROY NASR 1964 - 2013
For those who never knew him, Roy Nasr was one of the founders and driving forces of TriDubai; a bubbly, magnetic person with an effervescent smile who was unfailingly upbeat about life and relentlessly enthusiastic about triathlon. He was killed in the early hours on Friday 6 September 2013 by a drunk driver, whilst he was out on his bike on a training ride. You can find out more about Roy, and read what he meant to the triathlon community, here. If you would like to know more about the Tri Dubai activites in and around Dubai then please have a look here.
Roy was also one of the founders of Race ME, so at the first Race ME triathlon of each year the Roy Nasr Memorial Trophy is awarded (which for this season is the Roy Nasr Memorial Triathlon on 15th October). The trophy is awarded to a member of Dubai’s triathlon community who has inspired and helped others in the triathlon community over the last 12 months. We feel this award reflects the spirit of Roy and how he has inspired us all, not just to be better sportspeople but also to be better people.
THE ROY NASR AWARD
Each year people are asked to take a minute to nominate someone who you believe deserves this award. This may be someone that has been encouraging, supportive, offering helpful advice or perhaps someone that has added huge energy and positivity during training sessions.
Please can you submit your nominations along with a brief reason why you feel this person deserves the award via email firstname.lastname@example.org.
It is appreciated it if all nominations could be sent in by Saturday 8th October.
Deirdre Casey - Winner 2018
“What an honor it is to present the award this year to a truly deserving and inspiring icon of our sport, who gave generously but kept silent about it throughout the years.
Congratulations Deirdre Casey, this award is well overdue and truly well deserved.
Nominated by an overwhelming majority of your votes, and for so many solid reasons.
I’m sure Roy would be proud of this, having someone who truly embodies the spirit of TriDubai and truly represents Roy’s legacy in growing the community, selflessly and humbly while achieving so much and being not only a world-class athlete, but a true World Champion consistently raising the name of Dubai and TriDubai so high throughout the years; all while remaining so humble and so silent about it.
THANK YOU Didge for all your efforts throughout the years being founder and chairperson of TriDubai, for inspiring so many of us, and for being such a role model both as an athlete and as a person.” – Hasan Itani
Andy Edwards - 2017
What an honor for us to present the Roy Nasr Memorial trophy this year to Andy Edwards: a very dedicated, generous, funny, humble, focused and well-accomplished triathlete at a very high level, and at the same time inspiring and helping so many through his consistent quality training sessions throughout the season. You truly deserved that mate and thank you for everything you’re doing to TriDubai.
“I met Roy once at a house party long before I got into the sport. He, like many of the other people I have been fortunate enough to become friends with since joining TriDubai was warm, friendly and supportive, yet fiercely competitive. I’ve always tried my best to be the same sort of athlete and will continue to do so.
I’m honored to receive the award, and look forward to seeing you in the sea, on the track, and on the start line in the near future.” – Andy
Nick Watson - Winner 2016
I wanted to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to all, for awarding me this year’s ‘Roy Nasr Memorial Award’ from TriDubai at the ‘Roy Nasr Memorial Triathlon’, organised by Race.ME!
It took me totally by surprise and off-guard, so in my shocked babble speech, I am not sure if I said the right words and thanked all the right people?
Today was a very special, reflective day …
Anyway, first of all, I really need to thank and send respect all of Roy’s family and friends; especially Tina and Tala for being there today. I cannot even begin to imagine how difficult the last few years must have been for you all as a family, but please know that you have been in our thoughts and prayers. I think today itself, just proves how much the community loved and respected Roy, he is missed by so many! It is heart warming to see how his spirit and memory lives on with the Dubai Triathlon community … a community that would not be where it is today without him.
